Lee Whalen hails from Detroit, and has been active in the Worcester jazz
scene since 2001. Beginning his musical career in various jam
bands around town, he has since played in
The Known Associates, the
WPI Jazz Workshop, and various jazz and rock gigs in and around Worcester, MA.
A graduate of
Clemente Music Studios, Lee has been studying jazz since his arrival in Massachusetts, and has channeled his experience into founding The Sleepless Knights. "What really strikes me about jazz", he says, "is that you can play the same song every night, but have it be completely different each time you do. That burnin' solo you just did? You better've enjoyed it, because it's gone! Had a compete train wreck that last song? No worries, it'll be different tomorrow! Jazz, to me, is very similar to real life in that you have to roll with the punches and take what comes along without worrying too much about what's already happened."
